3 Day Camping • Patrick’s Point / Sue-meg State Park

EUREKA!

My favorite California State Park:

Sue-meg State Park (formerly Patrick’s Point)!

Hands down, one of my favorite places in all of California. You will find me retiring here, working at a cute bed and breakfast!

Perched atop dramatic cliffs and lush, forested headlands overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this place is everything I love about California. Towering coastal trees, rugged shorelines, and breathtaking ocean views, all tucked between the Pacific Ocean and the coastal mountains.

This was the first State Park I visited before even moving to California. During a 25 day road trip to 5 National and State Parks. Check out that trip here! Patrick Point completely captured everything that makes this state so special. It’s the kind of place that reminds you why people travel from all over the world to experience California’s wild and beautiful coastline.

We camp at Patrick’s Point every New Year’s Eve!

Whether we’re staying at one of the campsites or cozying up in one of the cabins, it’s become one of our favorite traditions.

Loads of campsite to choose from! Parks.ca.gov/SueMegStatePark

Our weekends are usually spent heading down the beach access to Agate Beach, or wandering along the Rim Trail, a beautiful path that hugs the cliffs and offers sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean.

And then there’s Wedding Rock. This massive rock formation is one of my favorite spots in the park, especially at sunset. Climbing up and watching the sun sink into the Pacific is an experience I’ll never get tired of. Me and my Husband got to say our wedding vows on this rock before getting married in 2023. Where for 100 years people have been coming to show their love.

RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR, 2018

2018 was my first time visiting Patrick’s Point, and I was completely blown away! I remember being fascinated by the fact that the “sand” was made up of tiny pebbles and if your in luck you can find your own Agate Stones!

And of course, no trip is complete without a little food stop on the way home. We always make a point to stop at Seascape Restaurant for a bowl of clam chowder! It’s the perfect way to wrap up a Northern California getaway!

RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR, 2019

We were too late to reserve a camp spot in 2019 at Patrick Point. We ended up camping up the road at Big Lagoon Campgrounds. My husband got me a Sony A7000 camera for Christmas that year and captured a stunning sunset!! You still have access to agate beach from this campsite.

RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR, 2020

Rang in the New Year during the pandemic just me and Jordan. We caught the most epic sunset I have ever seen. We were hit with an atmposheric river so I ALWAYS plan for rain when camping in December/Janaury! If you do want to go drive around, I would recommend driving to Fern Canyon. Its about a 45-hour drive north to the a canyone dominated by large lushes Ferns. It should be a 7th wonder of California! Make sure to bring water shoes as the trail is a creek.

RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR, 2021

Rang in the New year with our new puppy, Murphy! He was a puppy puppy and could get Parvo so we ended up carrying him the entire time and not letting him touch the ground lol dedicated dog parents right there. We visited the Sue Meg Village where they reconstructed traditional Yurok plank-house you can go into! It is really cool to see how the Sue-meg tribe lived.

RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR, 2022

Rang in the New Year with my mom and took photos for our baby announcement on Wedding Rock! Got hit with another Atmosphic River. This is the last year we tent camped as it was super muddy! I would recommend trying to reserve the cabin during this time of the year if you dont have an RV.

RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR, 2024

Rang in the Near Year with Cal (1 1/2), Jordan and my mom. First time camping with our son and it was really special. We stayed in one of the 4 cabins they have which was so nice because there was another atmospheric river!

RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR, 2025

Rang in the Near Year with the Rigsbee Family: Cal(2 1/2), Emmett (2 1/2) and Jett who was in my belly!

If you do need a grocery store, short drive to Murphy’s Market & Deli that has everything you need.

Fun fact! The 1997 Jurassic Park was filmed at the park! The overlook from which the dino-chase is observed, is Ceremonial Rock. There is also a scene filmed at Fern Canyon!

Hotels along Patrick Point Drive I would recommend to stay at:

The Blue Whale Room at The Most Whale Inn

The Lost Whale Inn is the cutest bed and breakfast I have ever stayed at! I cannot recommend this place enough!

Camp Trinidad RV Resort and Cabins. My In-laws rented a little cabin here and thought it was perfect.

Trinidad Inn. We got in late one night and decided to stay at a hotel before checking in for our campsite the next day. This was actually really nice! The drive is pretty long and majority is windy so you can get car sick easily. After that drive it is nice to have a shower and nice bed to relax in.

May you visit this slice of heaven in your life time! Its not an easy drive from Sacarmento but making this trip a tradition has been something we look forward to every year!

Let me know what campground is your favorite yearly tradition!

As Always,

Stay Kind!
